Dr. Shogan’s Weekly Summary and Social Media Report: February 5–February 9, 2024

On February 4, 2024, Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan and Director of the National Archives Foundation Patrick Madden, served pancakes to children who attended the 2024 Winter National Archives Sleepover.

“Whether you play them or watch them, sports have helped shape America and they provide a connection to our past,” Shogan told guests during her welcome remarks. “We’ve got records about some of our greatest athletes and sports moments here at the Archives.” For this sports-themed sleepover, Shogan wore a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey.

Also that morning, Dr. Shogan also enjoyed taking pictures with sleepover guests. Here she is pictured with the McCrudden family from University Park, MD.

Honoring Black History Month, on February 5, 2024, Dr. Shogan shared this diagram from the National Archives Catalog showing where Rosa Parks was seated on a Montgomery bus on December 1, 1955. National Archives Identifier 59069.

On February 6, 2024, Dr. Shogan held a conversation with Professor of History Douglas Brinkley as part of a program organized by the National Archives Foundation. “I look forward to more engagement with the community here in Florida about American history, archives, and preservation,” said Shogan in her post.

On February 7, 2024, Dr. Shogan shared this image of Hiram R. Revels of Mississippi, showcasing part of the credentials of Hiram Rhodes which are held by the National Archives and are accessible on the DocsTeach online tool. National Archives Identifier 594264.

On February 8, 2024, Dr. Shogan thanked Yale Institution for Social and Policy Studies (ISPS) for hosting a discussion between herself and Professor Stephen Skowronek covering the importance of preservation and access to government records.
