Dr. Shogan’s Weekly Summary: December 11–December 15, 2023

Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan met with Senator Shelley Moore Capito (left center in red pants) (R-WV) and her staff in the Archivist’s Board Room at the National Archives in Washington, DC on December 11, 2023.

That same day, Dr. Shogan held two rescued chihuahuas, thanks to the National Archives staff who arranged for several rescue and animal charities to visit for the Combined Federal Campaign.

On December 12, 2023, Dr. Shogan met with Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA) and his staff in her office at the National Archives in Washington, DC. The Congressman worked for the Richard Nixon Presidential Library after graduating from college during its transition to the National Archives and assisted with that move.

On December 14, 2023, Dr. Shogan met a group of 21 students and two faculty, from the McConnell Center at the University of Louisville, in the Washington Room at the National Archives in Washington, DC.

The same day, Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) (center left with striped tie) and members of his staff met with Dr. Shogan (center right wearing all black) in her office at the National Archives in Washington, DC.

On December 15, 2023, Bill of Rights Day, Dr. Shogan served as the host during a naturalization ceremony held in the Rotunda of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. Twenty-five people from 25 nations were sworn in as U.S. citizens in front of the nation’s Founding Documents.

Former First Lady of the United States Melania Trump, herself a naturalized citizen, served as the keynote speaker during the naturalization ceremony held in the Rotunda of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC on December 15, 2023.

Following the naturalization ceremony, Dr. Shogan attended a celebration event with the Honorable Elizabeth L. Gunn (left), judge in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Columbia, who presided as the petitioners took the oath of citizenship.
