Dr. Shogan’s Weekly Summary and Social Media Report: June 10-June 14, 2024

On June 10, 2024, Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan hosted the biannual NARA Civil Society meeting with other NARA staff. They had good attendance and conversation around strategic planning efforts, records management, declassification, and our National Action Plan for Open Government.

On June 11, 2024, Dr. Shogan attended the quarterly meeting of the National Archives Foundation (NAF) Board. The NAF partners with NARA for many events and promotions.

Later that day, Dr. Shogan also hosted Congressman Morgan Luttrell (R-TX) and his staff and discussed the move to digital records across the government.

That same day, Dr. Shogan hosted Congressman Brad Finstad (R-MN) and his family to the Rotunda and National Archives Building.

Also on June 11, 2024, Dr. Shogan shared this unique record saying “our records is this series of original watercolor and graphite costume sketches for a production of Pinocchio in 1939 by the NY Federal Theatre Project (FTP). FTP was established as a New Deal relief measure to employ professionals in the arts. https://catalog.archives.gov/id/518279.”

On June 12, 2024, Dr. Shogan shared a very unique document from the National Archives posting: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” These words, spoken on this day in 1987, echo through history. The

On June 13, 2024, Dr. Shogan shared a post about the new Power & Light Exhibit at the National Archives. “One of the most striking aspects of the photos on display in our #ArchivesPowerAndLight exhibit is the difficult working conditions documented by photographer Russell Lee. Here, Harry Fain loads coal (about 16-17 tons per day!) in very tight quarters. https://museum.archives.gov/power-and-light-russell-lee-coal-survey.”

Also on June 13, Dr. Shogan congratulated the Library of Congress and David Rubenstein on the opening of the new Treasures Gallery.

Also on June 14, 2024, Dr. Shogan posted in honor of the U.S. Army’s 249th birthday: “We are honored to collaborate with the U.S. Army in honor of its 249th birthday.
