On June 3, 2024, Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan shared a National History Day (NHD) post, announcing her role as a member of NHD’s 50th Anniversary Honorary Committee.
On June 5, 2024, Dr. Shogan shared the latest Featured Document on display at the National Archives Building: a letter written by Harvey Milk to President Jimmy Carter in June 1978. In the letter, Milk, the first openly gay person to be elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, asked for President Carter’s support in defeating Ballot Proposition 6, which would have banned gay and lesbian persons from working in California school districts. On June 6, 2024, Dr. Shogan shared an invitation to join the National Archives for an upcoming Juneteenth celebration at the William G. McGowan Theater. The event will feature Playback Theater, a professional troupe that will play back audience reflections on Juneteenth through a unique, improvisational performance.
