On September 18, Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan met with Secretary of the Smithsonian Dr. Lonnie Bunch and Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden in her office at the National Archives in Washington, DC. They discussed forging new paths to protect and share our nation’s treasures over lunch in the Archivist’s Reception Room.
On September 19, 2023, Dr. Shogan took part in “A Fireside Chat” with journalist and National Archives Foundation Board of Directors member Soledad O’Brien. During her visit to New York, Dr. Shogan stopped by the National Archives at New York City and toured spaces at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House. At the National Archives at New York City, Archivist Kelly McAnnaney showed Dr. Shogan a Customs Bureau Personal History of Employees volume that documents the appointment of explorer Matthew Henson. Plans for Liberty Island are in the foreground.
On September 21, 2023, Dr. Shogan welcomed Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy to the National Archives in Washington, DC (Archives I).
NARA staff shared a number of records with President Zelenskyy, including a draft of the Constitution, several notable historic items from US/Ukrainian diplomacy, and a telegram from President Abraham Lincoln to General Ulysses S. Later that same day, President Zelenskyy spoke to the media from the Rotunda at the National Archives Building.
