Dr. Shogan’s Weekly Summary and Social Media Report: June 17-June 21, 2024

On June 15, 2024, Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan visited the Star Wars and Strategic Defense exhibit at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

On June 16, 2024, Dr. Shogan gave the commencement address to the Social Ecology School at the University of California-Irvine. “Go Anteaters and best of luck to the Class of 2024!” she said on X.

On June 18, 2024, Dr. Shogan and Secretary of the Smithsonian Lonnie Bunch III viewed the Emancipation Proclamation and General Order No. 3, which were part of the National Archives’s Juneteenth celebrations. “The US National Archives and the Smithsonian have a wonderful partnership and I’m excited about all the things we’re going to do together!” said Dr. Shogan.

That same day, Dr. Shogan also met with National Archives’s interns and fellows in the Archivist’s Board Room.

On June 19, 2024, in honor of #Juneteenth, Dr. Shogan shared a photograph of General Order No. 3, which informed the people of Texas that all enslaved people were now free. Also on June 19, 2024, Dr. Shogan congratulated the National Archives on its 90th birthday!

On June 20, 2024, Dr. Shogan announced that the Emancipation Proclamation will be on permanent display at the National Archives Building in 2026. On June 21, 2024, Dr. Shogan shared a post that stated “On June 21, 1788, New Hampshire became the ninth of 13 states to ratify the Constitution and ensure its status as the official framework of the US government.
