On December 18, 2023, Archivist of the United States Dr. Colleen Shogan shared a series of holiday photos from Blair House, which serves as the President’s guest residence and played host to President Truman during a major White House renovation between 1948 and 1952.

Continuing the in spirit of the holidays, Dr. Shogan shared a video of President George W. Bush’s dog Barney from 2003. Watch Barney Reloaded, 2003 on the National Archives YouTube channel.

Dr. Shogan paid a visit to the Center for Legislative Activities, the part of NARA that preserves and makes available to researchers the historical records of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, on December 20, 2023. On December 27, 2023, Dr. Shogan shared a post about an upcoming event titled “Klan War: Ulysses S. Grant and the Battle to Save Reconstruction” taking place on Thursday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. ET. Dr. Shogan will speak with author Fergus Bordewich about how President Grant waged a two-term battle against both armed Southern enemies of Reconstruction and Northern politicians urging postwar conciliation.

At the end of the year, Dr. Shogan shared a post that listed three historic moments from 2023 at the National Archives:

  • Dr. Shogan was sworn in as the 11th Archivist of the United States.
  • The National Archives Building was designated as a National Historic Landmark.
  • We reflected on advances in archival and conservation practices 50 years after the 1973 National Personnel Records Center fire.

On January 5, Dr. Shogan introduced a new series of posts she will be sharing. The series will feature some of her favorite Presidential objects in NARA’s collections, like First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s clothing from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, in celebration of efforts to digitize them.
